Your capital ships are 'heroes' in the game with upgrades and whatnot and you had several different tech trees to persue. It was a combination of Warcraft 3 and Homeworld. I would recommend trying Sins of a Solar Empire. Unfortunately the boss showdowns are more tedious then anything else. You have squads of troops and go about killing enemy squads to reach the final point for a boss showdown. The closest comparison would be those missions where you don't have any buildings and are exploring a cave or country side - like the 1st and 3rd Alliance missions in the original Warcraft 3. There's a host of other differences between the two - but needless to say I don't recommend trying out World of Warcraft if you're looking for a game that is similar to Warcraft 3.ĭawn of War 2 is somewhat like Warcraft 3 - but also very very different.

WoW should have a free 10 day trial though - but unless you're a leveling nut you will see a very small portion of the game this way. The best way to get a feel for WoW if you don't want to actually pick it up and play it would be to play the Orc Campaign in the Warcraft 3 expansion - but instead of controlling 3 characters only use the beastman you gain at the start of the game.

These fall into one of three or four categories (kill X wolves, collect X wolf pelts, bring wolf pelt to person Y, go to X before the timer expires) but the game is easy/fast enough that the tedium is lost. WoW's gameplay consists of (mostly) doing quests.

Warcraft 3 can be played offline or online but you tend to play solo most of the time.
WoW has you playing online all the time (you can not play offline) in a persistant world with hundreds of other people. You control one character alone in WoW - you tend to control groups of units in an RTS. World of Warcraft is a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer On-line Role Playing Game) while Warcraft 3 is a RTS (Real Time Strategy). They take place in the same world and as such have the same background/lore to them but that's about the limit of the similarities. World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3 are completely different games.
